So what’s the big deal about that unreleased song in Eau Claire?

UPDATED 2/24/09 based on corrections made by David himself, according to a conversation with Angie of DCO.

Two nights ago the whole of Cookdom was abuzz with news that David had sung an unreleased song – that is, a song off of his unreleased 2nd indie album. Said album had been completed sometime in November 2007, and David was planning to release it around March of the following year. As you know, American Idol happened, and so the album now sits in some vault somewhere, with songs that have never been heard except for Optimistic to a Fault (aka Better Never than Late; view a video of an acoustic version here), and A Daily AntheM, which made it into David’s debut album and now closes every concert in the Declaration Tour. In case you haven’t seen it yet, this is the tracklist of the unreleased album:

A Daily AntheM
Chandeliers
The Downfall
Debutante
Elizabeth
Better Never Than Late
We’re Only Honest When We’re Sleeping
Eta Carinae
A Dirty Shame
Precious Decline

Thanks especially to annehalt who was the first to upload a video of the first ever performance of We’re Only Honest When We’re Sleeping at Eau Claire. I made an mp3 off of the video (download from our Media Library), all the more for us to enjoy. Our wonderful friends at DCO have studiously deciphered the lyrics of the song (credit to: Jolene, shellberry77, G-Marie, CCF, japhy rider, sarahdirtynerd, sengels_, tinawina, Nono, annie702, krittr517, prdwfmthr3nDCfan, Lefties_Rock, SharonC). Some words are up for debate, but more or less this is the result of their labors:

We’re Only Honest When We’re Sleeping

You’re a broken thing
Your cracks are showing through
Your best attempts
At making nice with the world
So keep on dreaming
Cause someday soon the things that you keep at bay
Will fade away
Or so I’ve heard

We’re only honest when we’re sleeping
We’re lying wide awake and dreaming
Wishing that we were someone else
This bed’s as cold as hell
When you’re lying next to me.

It’s a twisted game
A brief and oft-repeating
Prose that never seems to resonate
Spin the finger of blame
It’s always on the heart
That kept on beating
While the other pulled up lame

We’re only honest when we’re sleeping
We’re lying wide awake and dreaming
Wishing that we were someone else
This bed’s as cold as hell
When you’re lying next to me

The ceiling paints a picture
And everything’s a welcome work of art
Amidst the chaos in the mirror
The lies in lipstick red

We’re only honest when we’re sleeping
We’re lying wide awake and dreaming
Wishing that we were someone else
This bed’s as cold as hell

We’re only honest when we’re sleeping
We’re lying wide awake and dreaming
Wishing that we were someone else
This bed’s as cold as hell
When you’re lying next to me.
